Oaklanders are marching to stop police brutality against our black and brown residents. We’ve elected many leaders and they’ve made many promises, yet the problem persists. Yet another new Mayor, or police chief, or city councilmember cannot solve the problem on their own. Our government’s policies only reflect the will of those who have the time and money to participate. To fix this we must fix our democracy.

- Shift funding towards addressing the root of crime
- Minimize the use of armed police as much as possible, make police more effective with a smaller mandate
- Limit police hours and allowed overtime, by eliminating unnecessary activities. Overworked police officers are unsafe
- Overhaul the police commission: commissioners should be directly elected by the voters, and it should be a full time job. The elected police commission should have broad powers over the police department to increase accountability and engagement.
